If you’ve been reading or listening to the news, you know by now that bariatric surgery helps people lose weight; it’s not that difficult to understand. What you may not know is that it’s good for your health in a number of other ways as well.
Two recent American studies have found that bariatric surgery may be, in fact, the best weapon against Type II diabetes. The studies were published this week in the New England Journal of Medicine, and they’re the first ever to rigorously compare bariatric surgery to standard treatments in diabetic patients. Up until these studies, only anecdotal evidence existed to connect the two, but researchers now are saying that there’s hard data to confirm what doctors have long suspected.
Diabetes is one of the fastest-growing diseases of the twenty-first century. It causes high blood sugar levels and results in obesity that is difficult to manage or reduce, even with diet and medication.
Bariatric surgery helps control diabetes through a known treatment ”weight loss”as well as by changing the patient’s anatomy, affecting the hormones that control the metabolism of fats and sugars.
If you have been having trouble managing your diabetes, or if you’d like to stop your dependency on medication for diabetes, cholesterol, blood pressure, and triglycerides, ask your health practitioner about bariatric surgery. The evidence is in!
